How To Beat The 3pm Slump & Avoid The Vending Machine!

It’s the start of a new week and that post-lunch slump has me reaching for another cup of coffee. It’s post lunch and all you want to do is go home to sleep but unfortunately, you can’t.  

Alternatively, you go on a mission to find coffee and snacks, hopefully resulting in an afternoon pick me up. While this might make you feel better at the time, this is a habit that you need to break! Not only is it bad for your wallet but summer is just around the corner, think of your bikini body! Easier said than done, right?

If you’ve been working hard in the gym but you’re not noticing any changes in your body. You afternoon trip to the vending machine could be setting you back. Avoid that afternoon slump and lose weight with these small yet effective tips!

1. Don’t Skip Breakfast

It’s called the most important meal of the day for a reason. What you eat for breakfast will set the tone for the rest of your day. I love having a healthy smoothie or some porridge whilst working at my desk. It great for a sustained energy release throughout the day.

2. Avoid Sugar 

When you’re tired and you need a pick me up, a chocolate bar with your coffee might sound like just the thing. However, that spike of energy it gives you is going to drop just as fast. Swap out your afternoon chocolate bar with a banana for energy or an apple for a natural sugar hit.

3. Eat A Smaller Lunch

While it’s a good idea to have a big lunch and smaller dinner, try to avoid eating too much. Your body will be using up all its energy trying to digest your lunch and by the time 3pm hits you’ll be slower than octopi with ankle weights. You need to save your energy to get you through the afternoon.

4. Hydrate

If you’re sitting at a desk all day you might not feel like drinking (the recommended daily  intake) 2-3 litres of water. However, there is nothing better to ward off drowsiness and cravings like drinking plenty of water. Keep a water bottle on your desk to sip on throughout the day, it’s also great for flushing out toxins and aiding digestion.

5. Just Take A Break

It’s recommended to get up every half an hour to stretch. I like to take a brisk walk around the block on my lunch break, to get some fresh air and get the blood flowing to my brain. Give someone a quick call to take your mind off work for a minute and recuperate. 

6. Drink Green Tea Instead Of Coffee

Green tea is a good way to get a small caffeine hit without laying awake all night. Green tea has many benefits but a the perfect on for work it improved brain function! 

Implementing these small yet effective methods should help keep momentum throughout the day. Start to implement these changes and they will slowly but surely start to become habits.
