5 Job Interview Tips For The Perfect Interview

If you have successfully applied for jobs, prepared a resume, a cover letter and are receiving interview requests, go you!

You are obviously motivated which means you are already half way there. Now it’s time to prepare yourself for the dreaded job interview (which probably won’t be as scary as you think). In my experience, it’s all about being prepared and knowing what you want from a job. Here are my top 5 tips to rocking your next job interview.

1. Interview Preparation: Do Your Research

A big mistake people make is applying for a job you really want, but not doing your research on the company that’s hiring you. You know you love their products or the service they provide but do you know where they came from and how they got there? If the answer is no, it’s likely that there’s will be too. The more you know about them, the better you’ll be able to answer their questions. It will also help you establish if this job is the right fit for you.

Quick tip: Don’t forget that you’re interviewing them too! Practice you interviews skills and ask them questions you have about the role and tasks you’ll be expected to complete.

2.  Dress For Success

Dress appropriately depending on the position you are applying for but always dress to impress. It’s always better to be over dressed than under. Keep jewellery and makeup to a minimum (unless you’re applying for a job in the makeup jewellery industry of course, then go nuts)  You can check out my Get Ready With Me – Job Interview video, to see how I did my makeup for a job interview (this was my first youtube video, so bare with me).

Quick tip: Practice some interview techniques whilst looking in the mirror, that way you can see how you come across to others. Practice welcoming body language to help you get the job.

3. Make A Good First Impression

When it comes to your career you want to make a good first impression on everyone. This means being on time, being confident and prepared for success. Try to arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can settle in and gather your thoughts. Don’t forget to bring along some samples of your work, your resume a pen and any notes you have. You want to make a good impression on everyone. From the receptionist to the cleaning lady, you never know who knows who. Be warm, polite and remember that people want to work with enthusiastic people who want to learn!

Quick tip: Make sure your brush your teeth before an interview and if you’re chewing gum, get rid of it, stat! Always be professional and take your work seriously.

4. Show Your Passion

You may have little to no experience in your chosen field but if you have passion and drive you are half way there. People want to work with people who are willing to learn and have a passion for their area of expertise.  It’s all about working as a team to grow the business and ensure its success. Common interview questions should be followed up with an example from your previous experience.

Quick tip: Remember to keep a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

5. Network & Stay On the Radar

If you want something bad enough you have to let people know. Ensure you ask for contact details from everyone you meet, this is called networking. You never know who could help develop your career in the future. After your interview send an email thanking each person who interviewed you. This will give you an edge over anyone who doesn’t.

Quick tip: Even if you don’t get the job, thank them for their time and the opportunity.
