Our skin in our biggest and most complex organ. It plays a vital role in protecting our body, so we have to protect it!
There are many things that can harm our skin, our Aussie sun especially! However, there are many factors that also contribute to unhealthy skin. The pollution in the air is another very real threat to our chances at healthy, glowing skin.
Never fear, if you make your skin care a priority it will quickly become second nature. Follow these skin care tips and you’ll be on your way to healthier skin!
A big one for us Aussie girls, sun exposure can be very damaging to our skin. Immediate effects like sunburn may be painful for a couple of weeks however, there are more series consequences down the line. The sun’s rays can cause:
- Skin cancer!
- Age spots
Limiting your sun exposure is your best defence against the sun! Covering up, applying sunscreen and wearing protective eyewear is also important when enjoying the sun.
This is a big one, especially is you’re a city girl like me. Pollution goes undetected because often we can’t see it. Yet, it is a major factor affecting our skin.
The pollution in the air strips away all your skins natural oils causing your skin to dry out. Dry skin is a leading factor of wrinkles, so stay hydrated! Drinking water regularly is a natural defence against pollution.
Cleansing twice daily will removing dirt, oils, germs and dead skin cells. However, scrubbing your face with harsh soaps and rough face scrubs could be doing more damage than good. Scrubs often scratch the skin, rather than clean it.
Gently massage your face with a warm washcloth morning and night. This will stimulate blow flow, then gently cleanse your face and rinse with cold water to close your pores. Pat your skin dry (never rub) and apply your favourite moisteriser.
Washing your bedding regularly is extremely important. We spend a lot of time sleeping and there are all sorts nasties lurking in your sheets. Resting your face on the same pillow case for too long leads to a build up of:
- Dead skin cells (attracting mites!)
- Bodily fluids
It sounds gross right? Well, it’s normal but it’s important for the health of your skin to wash your bedding regularly.
As one of my biggest triggers for skin problems, I know how stress can affect your skin. Uncontrolled stress leads to breakouts and other skin problems which can lead to more stress! A healthy state of mind is the only thing that can help with this skin issue. Take the steps to reduce your stress like:
- Knowing your limits
- Getting enough rest
- Writing a to-do list
Make time to do things you enjoy. Like taking your dog for a walk to the park, getting some fresh air. The result might be more dramatic than you think!
